MAP Engenharia e Construção is responsible for the extension and refurbishment of ANNA, a residential development located on Avenida Alexandre Herculano in Lisbon. This refurbishment project breathes new life into a historic building dating back to the 1940s, restoring its original purpose as a residential building while adapting it to meet today’s standards of comfort, safety and functionality.
With six storeys and a distinctive architectural identity, the building is undergoing a highly technical intervention that prioritises the preservation of its historic fabric without compromising the demanding standards of modern construction. The project has been carefully designed to respect the building’s character, preserving its structural integrity while incorporating contemporary construction solutions that will ensure its long-term durability.
The works retain the majority of the existing structure, comprising reinforced concrete elements and load-bearing masonry walls, complemented by the selective introduction of new structural components required to support the updated design.
Among the most technically challenging aspects of the project are the demolition, reconstruction and extension of the sixth floor, together with the complete refurbishment of the roof. These operations require exceptional precision and include carefully planned structural demolition works to ensure the building’s stability throughout every stage of construction.
At basement level, excavation works will be carried out beneath the existing structure to create new technical and functional spaces. The new basement will accommodate private parking accessed via a vehicle lift, a gymnasium, dedicated waste management facilities for both the residential units and the restaurant, a water storage tank for the building’s fire protection system, a new passenger lift and all the technical infrastructure required for the efficient operation of the development.
More than a construction project, ANNA represents a commitment to urban regeneration and the preservation of Lisbon’s built heritage. It is a development that combines engineering expertise, innovation and respect for history, helping to safeguard the city’s architectural identity while creating spaces designed to meet the needs of future generations.
At MAP Engenharia e Construção, we see every refurbishment project as an opportunity to transform complex technical challenges into outstanding engineering solutions. ANNA is another example of our ability to deliver highly complex developments, where experience, precision and quality come together to give historic buildings a new future.
